What is the Worldwide Web? (WWW)

WorldWide Web

The World Wide Web was developed by the British Scientist Tim Berners-Lee (b.1951) in 1989/1990. It is also commonly known as “the Web”. It was designed as a system of connecting web pages together using links or more properly hyperlinks.

These are the text and buttons that you click on while surfing. They can link you to other parts of a document or web page, other pages on a website or other websites. Berners-Lee created the first website in 1991 so, relatively speaking, it is all very recent.

Many people consider the Internet to be the same as the Worldwide Web so it is worth pointing out that the WWW is not the Internet but a system designed to run on the Internet.

Hyperlinks are actually what the Internet is all about. Each of the Business Website Information links on the menu to the lefts are hyperlinks as are the links at the top and bottom of this page.
