What Content to Include on your Website

What content to includeI am often approached by people who want a website because they have recognised that this is now an essential part of any business. However quite often they have no idea what content to include in it. This section outlines most of the standard content pages that you may want to provide for your clients. They are not relevant to all sites so you should choose only those that are suitable for the business you are in.

For the uninitiated a web "page" is an individual location on a website such as a home page. When you click any of the links on a page you are normally being directed to another page. It can help if you think of your site as an online brochure with several pages. Just as your brochure would be organised with several pages illustrating what you offer, or what you do, so must your website.

If you are considering content for your web pages the easiest way to do this is to look at other similar websites to see what they have included. This should stimulate ideas about what you want on your own site. For example if you are looking for inspiration for your “About us” page just look at a few other sites and include those items that you think would work for you. A search for the phrase "about us" on your favourite search engine should produce the results you want.

Website Content - What to Consider

Bear in mind that people read web pages differently from a printed page. They tend to scan web pages rather than systematically reading every word. This is a bit like how you would read brochure or pamphlet.

The information you want to highlight must be brief, punchy and to the point. You must use lots of highlighted text, headings and short sentences. If more detailed information is required you can link to this from the headings and highlighted text. Having said that, you should not get too concerned about this. Your website designer should be able to advise you on how the content should be laid out.

Website Content for SEO

While we have made the point that the information included on your web pages must be brief and punchy you must also provide sufficient text to tell the search engines what your page is about. I have had people calling me to ask why they are not getting found when someone searches for stuff like "furry green widgets". I often have to point out that while there is a picture of a furry green widget on their page the actual text "furry green widgets" is not. I must emphasise that the text content of your pages must include the words and phrases that you want to get found on.
