Some people think that graphic design on a website is the single most important component. In some cases this may be true but for small business websites the most important component is ensuring they convey the right message to their prospective clients and als that they get found by people searching for their product or service.
You can have the most beautifully designed website in the world but it will not help your business if no one can find it.
Once people find and log on to your website they will form their opinion within the first three or four seconds. If it looks at first glance that it could provide the information, product or service it will grab their attention and make them click into the internal pages of your website.
The overall appearance and design of the website is quite important at this stage but you should not try too hard to impress people. Remember that this is a business website; your visitors do not expect to be entertained. They are likely to be busy people and they probably don’t have time to watch animations or fancy Flash introductions. Don’t cloud the issue with stuff that is of no consequence. Show them the meat!
As an example of this have a look at Google's home page design. Much of their success has been down to the fact that it has hardly changed over the years and it is very easy to use. They know that people don't want to be impressed by the search engine interface but by the quality of the search results.
By all means ensure that the graphic design quality is sufficient to ensure that your website looks business like and professional, but you must ensure that your visitors can find what they are looking for quickly and intuitively. This makes website navigation (or the menu if you like) very important.
Many website designers can provide suitable business website graphics sourced from the many third party image and graphic design providers that have sprung up to meet this demand. Your website should of course be designed using appropriate colors. For example do not use black backgrounds with pink and orange letters unless you want people to think that you are running an adult website. Look at other similar business websites and see what colors they are using for inspiration. If you already have a logo the colors may have to be chosen to blend in with this.
You can also hire a graphic designer to create a logo for you and there are some low cost options available. Just bear in mind that at the top level, professional graphics companies will probably charge much more than the cost of the website for a simple logo.
